Data from Dealer Auction has shown that the Peugeot 2008 and 3008 had some of the largest profit margins of any used cars under £10,000, during the month of May.
The Hyundai Tucson topped the list, with an average profit margin of £2,700, with the Vauxhall Mokka X following closely at £2,675.
It was Peugeot that saw arguably the strongest profit margins, though, with the 2008 and 3008 coming in third and fourth, with average margins of £2,575 and £2,500 respectively.
Kieran TeeBoon, marketplace director at Dealer Auction, said: “It’s brilliant to see mainstream brands like Peugeot and Hyundai going toe to toe with premium brands.
“There’s a huge appetite for used cars at the moment, with the SMMT recently announcing that the Q1 market surpassed two million units for the first time since pre-pandemic 2019.
“Interestingly, the Tucson and Qashqai were also among the SMMT’s top 10 most popular used models for the quarter, showing they aren’t just niche profit wins – they also offer consistent, broad-based appeal.”
Models from BMW also saw strong profit margins in the sub-£10,000 market, with the 1-Series placing fifth (£2,375), and the 3-Series placing 10th (£2,195).
1-Series models were also the second fastest to sell of vehicles on the list, with the average 1-Series on Auto Trader selling within 29 days of listing, just behind the Nissan Qashqai (28 days).
BMW also saw the highest average margins of any brand, for the fifth year in a row, again in the sub-£10,000 market (£2,450), with Mercedes-Benz following (£2,400), and Peugeot coming third (£2,175).
TeeBoon said: “BMW has certainly shown its mettle. We always see a lot of shuffling in the makes and models charts, but BMW’s dominance is unchallenged in capturing dealer attention.
“However, there was more diversity further down the table, with Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and Volvo performing well – reinforcing the importance of looking at the latest insights to outpace the market.”
In the £10,000-plus market, Land Rover dominated – the Discovery Sport topped the list with an average margin of £4,325, while the Range Rover Evoque placed second at £3,925.
Peugeot also performed well in this market, with the 3008 placing fifth, with an average margin of £3,050.
The data was released as part of Dealer Auction’s Retail Margin Monitor, which compares auction prices with Auto Trader average retail sale numbers.
