Paul Tanner, Alan Day Volkswagen’s managing director, is celebrating 30 years with the business.

Paul joined the industry as a delivery driver at Alan Day VW in Hampstead when he was 19,  and has steadily worked his way to the top. Paul also played football for Watford and represented Britain in the hurdles, but following an injury had to cut short his athletics career. Paul spent two years as an apprentice in the service department. He was promoted to supervisor in the parts department, service manager, then aftersales manager and general manager.

Paul, 49, who lives in Hendon, puts his success down to hard work and being in the right place at the right time. He commented: “I suppose the thing I’m most proud of is the customer satisfaction part and we were recently voted first and second across the whole VW network in the UK for customer care.

“I’m very proud of my staff and how hard they work and many of them were here when I started.  It means we look after our customers properly from the moment they walk into the dealership to book a service or report a fault to the part when they drive away in their brand-new vehicle.

Paul’s working relationship with the group’s owner was inspirational in his development: “I learnt a lot from Alan Day, who was a stickler for detail and demanded everything should be perfect. The cars had to be spotless and the service to the customer had to be perfect through all departments.”

Paul concluded: “The years have flown by but I am still as enthusiastic as the day I joined.  The main changes I have seen in the retail side of the business is that there are more female car buyers out there than ever before.  Our research shows women are having more influence in choosing the family car and expect a first-class service from the start of their journey with us to when we hand over the keys.”
