Volvo has expanded its partnership with Google, in a move which will see Gemini AI software integrated into its cars.
The technology will enable drivers to interact with the car’s voice command system using more natural conversation.
Gemini will allow users to request information about their destination, translate messages into other languages before sending, and access content from the car’s user manual.
Volvo currently uses Google Assistant in its models with Google built-in. This will be replaced by Gemini later this year.
Google will also work directly with Volvo to deliver new features through over-the-air updates. Volvo vehicles will now serve as reference hardware platforms for the development of new Android Automotive OS features.
Patrick Brady, vice president of Android for cars at Google, said: “We’re excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry.”
Google and Volvo demonstrated Gemini in the new EX90 electric SUV at the Google I/O developer conference.
Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, said: “We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this.
“Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer eco-system into our products first.
“With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”
