MIKE Manley has been appointed chief executive of the FCA group after Sergio Marchionne was forced to step down by ill health following surgery.

Marchionne had been due to retire early next year after 10 years at the helm where he masterminded the rescue of Fiat from the brink of collapse in 2004 and turning Chrysler into a profitable venture following its acquisition in 2009.

British-born Manley has run the Jeep brand since June 2009 overseeing a quadrupling of sales and placed it at the centre of the Marchionne’s FCA Group strategic plans.

A statement from FCA said that unexpected complications arose while Marchionne was recovering from surgery and that these had worsened significantly and as a consequence, he would be unable to return to work.
