HARMAN, automotive technology supplier and a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has become one of the first companies to open-source a complete connected services platform for vehicles.

The platform is now publicly available through the Eclipse Connected Services Platform (ECSP) project, marking a key milestone in the automotive industry’s transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

The platform, developed under the guidance of HARMAN and now part of the Eclipse SDV Working Group, is already in use in large-scale production by automakers and fleet operators.

It supports connected vehicle deployments of up to 100,000 vehicles and provides a broad range of capabilities.

These include secure vehicle-to-cloud connectivity, large-scale data ingestion, user and identity management, remote device control, and real-time application enablement.

Heiko Huettel, vice president of software products at HARMAN, said: “Successfully accelerating the transformation of the software-defined vehicles era requires a collaborative spirit that brings together leaders across automotive and software development.

“By open-sourcing our connected services platform, we’re giving others across the industry the ability to build upon that foundation, speed up their development cycles, ensure greater interoperability, and contribute to a more robust, open ecosystem.”

The move was designed to encourage industry-wide collaboration and innovation by providing developers and OEMs with a scalable, modular foundation for SDV architecture.

The ECSP platform supports cloud-native software development, making it easier for automakers to build and deploy advanced digital experiences inside and around the vehicle.

Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, said: “HARMAN is demonstrating industry leadership in contributing the ECSP to the Eclipse SDV Working Group.

“ECSP brings important new capabilities that accelerate the development of flexible cloud-native vehicle architectures in open source.

“With advanced support for connectivity, remote management, fleet operations and data monitoring, ECSP gives automotive OEMs a powerful open-source foundation for delivering differentiated in-vehicle experiences.”

HARMAN became a strategic member of the Eclipse SDV Working Group last year and has committed to investing in the development of open-source communities.

The company has called on other stakeholders in the automotive ecosystem to participate in the initiative and help shape the future of connected and software-defined mobility.
