Ben, an automotive industry charity, and the TV show DIY SOS are asking for volunteers and donations to help bring a hospitalised child home.

Dan Flemen, the son of APL Vehicle Services employee Nigel, was hospitalised in November 2022, when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Since then, Dan has been at Royal Manchester Hospital, where he had emergency surgery, before suffering a stroke.

He now has severe disabilities, and requires 24-hour care.

The family’s home is currently not wheelchair-friendly, and would not be able to support Dan without an accessible bedroom, an adapted bathroom, facilities for full-time care, and a social space for reconnecting with family and friends.

Nigel Flemen, Dan’s dad, said: “Our little family has always been very close, and the thought that Dan may never be able to come home is something we can’t consider or think about, it’s too devastating.

“That’s why we are asking for help. Dan needs to come home, where he belongs, with all of his family.

“We feel this would aid his recovery, mental health and quality of life.”

The BBC will contribute to the cost of the repair work when the family appear on DIY SOS, but volunteers and donations are vital to making the work possible,

Donations can be made here, and general volunteers, electricians, decorators, joiners, and plumbers are encouraged to offer their support between 16th July and 23rd July.

Julie, Dan’s mother, has been living in hospital accommodation to be with him, while Nigel and Dan’s sisters travel 50 miles from their home in Freckleton to be with him.

Flemen said: “We are reaching out for help because we believe in the power of community.

“With your support, we can transform our home into a place where Dan can be surrounded by the love and care he needs and deserves.

“Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to bringing Dan home. Thank you.”
