Online car retailer BuyaCar witnessed a huge spike in searches for electric and hybrid cars i followed the government announcement of the 2040 ban on conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

On the day after the government announcement  the site found customers looking for an electric or hybrid car increased by 113% over the daily average for the previous week.

Recent research by BuyaCar.co.uk showed that three out of five current diesel owners plan to replace their car with a petrol or hybrid vehicle next time they change. Most owners cited the prospect of emissions charges in a growing number of cities in Britain and Europe as their immediate concern. 20% of those who planned to switch predicted they would choose a hybrid model and just five per cent saying they would opt for electric.

Austin Collins, Managing Director of BuyaCar.co.uk, said, “Even though the end of conventional engines isn’t coming for 23 years drivers are already looking at their options.“There’s no need for anyone to panic, because we’ve all been given plenty of advance warning, but it does make sense to consider the benefits of a more efficient car. As well as the fuel savings, business users can make enormous savings on company car tax.

“Even though the interest in hybrids and electrics spiked in the immediate aftermath of the announcement, searches for them have settled back to a higher level than we have ever seen before.
