The XC60 SUV has become the best-selling Volvo of all time, with more than 2.7 million units sold.

Since going on sale in 2008, the XC60 has been the first car to introduce a number of safety features, including low-speed automatic emergency braking and oncoming lane mitigation, both of which are now commonly found on other cars.

Global demand for the model is so high that it became the first Volvo model to also be produced in China, with a factory in Chengdu joining the Gothenburg plant.

It overtook the 240, of which 2,685,171 units were produced during a near-20-year run, between 1974 and 1993.

The 240 also featured safety innovations, such as crumple zones, side-impact protection, and the child booster cushion.

Despite the XC60 out-selling the 240 globally, it is yet to overtake it in the UK market, with 160,000 XC60s sold, compared to 240,000 240s.

Susanne Hägglund, head of global offer at Volvo Cars, said: “Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car – you could spot one in almost every driveway.

“Today the XC60 has taken over that position in two ways. Not only as the family favourite, but also becoming our all-time top-seller, which in itself is the ultimate proof point of a successful car.

“And now, with the latest updates, it gets even better.”

The XC60 was also the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe in 2024.

For 2026, the XC60 will be updated with design changes, new technology, and improved comfort.

An electric equivalent, the EX60, will also go on sale next year.
