Students at Lady Hawkins School in Kington, Herefordshire, were given an insight into the wide-ranging career opportunities within the automotive industry during an engaging talk by Tim Benson.

Speaking to Year 10 and 11 pupils, Tim shared his journey in the sector, emphasising that success is not determined by background or academic achievements. He challenged the common perception that automotive careers are limited to mechanics and car sales, instead showcasing paths in diagnostics, engineering, software development, and business management.

“It was great to engage with such an enthusiastic group of students and shed light on the many career paths available in the automotive aftermarket,” said Tim. “With rapid technological advancements, we need bright, passionate young people to help drive the industry forward.”

Drawing on his experience growing up in a family-run garage, Tim highlighted the value of apprenticeships as a practical route into the industry, offering hands-on experience and recognised qualifications. He also pointed to the sector’s vital contribution to the UK economy, employing over 813,000 people and generating £24.3bn annually.

As the automotive landscape evolves with electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, artificial intelligence, and advanced diagnostics, Tim encouraged students to explore the industry’s future potential. He concluded the session with an open Q&A, sparking discussions about career pathways.

“It was a fantastic, thought-provoking session on all things automotive,” said Lydia Stevens, careers adviser at Lady Hawkins. “Our students and staff truly appreciate employers like Tim who invest in the future of young people.”
