NFDA highlights progress and challenges for women in automotive ahead of International Women’s Day
NFDA chief executive Sue Robinson emphasises the importance of gender diversity in the automotive sector, urging continued efforts to break down barriers and foster inclusivity.
The automotive industry is evolving, with gender diversity and inclusion becoming key focal points, according to Sue Robinson, chief executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), ahead of International Women’s Day.
“The automotive industry is evolving, and one of the most encouraging aspects of this transformation is the increasing focus on gender diversity and inclusion. International Women’s Day underscores the urgency of fostering fairness and equity in every workplace. Every individual, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to excel in this dynamic sector,” Robinson said.
“As a member of the Automotive 30% Club, I work alongside over 70 CEOs and MDs dedicated to driving meaningful change. Progress has been made, yet outdated stereotypes and barriers still exist, making it crucial for us to continue championing an inclusive culture.”
She highlighted the importance of leadership in fostering inclusivity and the role of mentorship in supporting career progression. “Since becoming chief executive at NFDA, I have been fortunate to witness first hand the support and dedication of dealer leaders and teams. However, there is still a significant journey ahead to ensure equality is not just an aspiration but a reality across the sector.”
Robinson emphasised the need to create a level playing field based on talent rather than gender. “Mentorship plays a crucial role in this journey. By offering guidance and encouragement, we can help all individuals navigate the challenges of the industry and unlock their full potential. With confidence, resilience, and access to the same opportunities as their male counterparts, women can thrive in automotive careers. Businesses must focus on creating a level playing field where talent is the defining factor – not gender.”
She also offered advice for women looking to advance in the industry. “For women looking to progress in the sector, my advice is simple: embrace every opportunity, believe in your capabilities, and never hesitate to seek support when needed. A fulfilling career is built not just on ambition, but also on finding joy and passion in your work.”
Robinson pointed to the Drive My Career initiative, launched in 2018, as part of NFDA’s efforts to support a more diverse workforce. “Franchised dealers have taken great strides in ensuring equal access to career opportunities, but sustained effort is key to attracting and retaining top talent.”
“NFDA’s employment initiative, Drive My Career, launched in 2018, has been instrumental in this mission. Many of our members actively participate in this initiative, reinforcing their commitment to a more diverse workforce. However, progress is an ongoing process, and we encourage even more businesses to get involved. By sharing successes, breaking down barriers, and leading by example, we can shape an industry where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”
“This International Women’s Day, NFDA and Drive My Career will celebrate the incredible women in the sector with a social media campaign showcasing pioneers, innovators, and industry leaders.”
