The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has announced the winners of its Annual Awards 2025, celebrating achievements in apprenticeships, learning, and industry partnerships.

Becky Pearce (pictured, centre left) from Dick Lovett Bristol BMW was named Apprentice of the Year for her dedication and skills as a Vehicle Technician.

Joining BMW Bristol in 2019 as an apprentice, Pearce distinguished herself with problem-solving abilities, and actively supported recruitment efforts, attending career events to promote apprenticeships.

Her achievements include passing her EPA with distinction, winning BMW Vehicle Technician Apprentice of the Year 2024, and working with West Surrey Racing in the British Touring Car Championship. Now a fully qualified technician, Becky mentors new apprentices and continues to inspire future talent.

Jacob Fish from Bridgwater and Taunton College received the Learner of the Year award and the FMI Bursary for his perseverance and commitment to education. After losing a close family member, Fish relocated and resumed his studies in the IMI Level 2 programme. Despite joining later than his peers, he worked to catch up, dedicating extra hours to his studies and taking on a peer-teaching role in workshops.

Fish’s perfect attendance and proactive approach have made him a standout learner. His ability to overcome personal hardships while excelling academically and supporting classmates showcases his leadership and determination.

Autotech Group was recognised as Partner of the Year for its ongoing support of the IMI and efforts to address skills shortages in the automotive aftermarket. Since 2010, Autotech Group has contributed to the industry through initiatives like Autotech Recruit, Autotech Training, Autotech Academy, and Autotech Connect.

The company has developed bespoke training programmes, provided technical and non-technical IMI training, and collaborated internationally to enhance workforce skills. Autotech Academy’s internship programme has partnered with 120 IMI centres, achieving a 95% job placement rate for newly qualified technicians. Additionally, Autotech Connect has worked with the IMI to improve remote observations using AR technology, enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience.

Al-Futtaim’s Automotive Talent Centre was named International Partner of the Year for its commitment to training and workforce development. Established in 2023 as an IMI Approved Centre, the facility has focused on preparing employees for the transition to electric and alternative fuel vehicles. In 2024, over 1,500 employees completed IMI Level 1 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness training, with plans to certify another 1,500 in 2025.

Key initiatives include: EV Training Expansion: More than 1,000 users have registered for IMI EV certification, with 147 achieving advanced Technical Levels 2-4; local First Responder EV 2.2 Training: Civil Defence and Police forces are trained to handle EV emergencies safely and efficiently; the launch of EV Photocard System: Associates working with high-voltage vehicles are now required to carry verifiable ID cards; IMI TechSafe Campaign: This initiative promotes EV safety and aligns with sustainability goals like COP 28 and the local Net-Zero campaign.

Carolyn Bundey, Senior Manager of Strategic Projects, was recognised for her role in advancing IMI’s mission, particularly through her leadership in Phase 2 of the ‘More to Motor’ campaign, which champions diversity, equity, and inclusion in the automotive sector.

Bundey was recognised for being instrumental in breaking down industry stereotypes and fostering inclusivity within the Toyota and Lexus retail network. Her expertise in project management and stakeholder engagement has driven measurable success in expanding IMI’s reach. As a member of the IMI Diversity Working Group, she has shaped key equity and inclusion strategies across the sector.

Volkswagen Group UK was recognised for its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Since launching its Gender Intelligence Strategy in 2015, Volkswagen has expanded its DEI initiatives to include six Employee Network Groups with over 640 members, free period products, neurodiversity support, and an LGBTQ+ policy.

Volkswagen also updated 21 policies to enhance inclusivity, improved recruitment processes, and joined the Disability Confident Scheme. As the first automotive company to earn Inclusive Employers’ Gold standard, Volkswagen continues to set industry benchmarks in DE&I.

The President’s Award was presented to Paula Cooper and Dale Wyatt for their contributions to the automotive industry.

Cooper has over 30 years of experience in the industry, holding various leadership roles at Toyota GB. She has pioneered initiatives in customer experience and talent development and is recognised for her mentorship and commitment to supporting women in the sector.

Wyatt has led Suzuki GB for over a decade, focusing on simplifying business operations and ensuring the brand remains a trusted choice. He will retire at the end of March, leaving a lasting impact on the automotive industry.

Sue Robinson was honoured with the Sue Brownson Award for her contributions to the automotive retail sector. As chief executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), she has been instrumental in raising the profile of the sector, growing NFDA membership, and launching initiatives such as Drive My Career and the Electric Vehicle Approved programme.

Catherine Faiers received the Inspiring Automotive Woman Award for her efforts in creating a more inclusive automotive industry. She launched the ‘Great Events for All’ initiative to promote safe and inclusive industry events, mentored women facing intersectional barriers, and led Auto Trader’s ethnicity network for three years. Catherine’s leadership and advocacy continue to drive meaningful change in the industry.
