Electric vehicle drivers could travel more than 200 miles for the cost of a coffee if they charge using a dynamic electricity tariff, according to EV charging company Ohme.

The warning comes as the standard electricity rate rises to 27p/kWh on 1st April. With Starbucks’ popular Caramel Macchiato priced at £4.10, Ohme says that same amount could power an EV for 234 miles when charged on a smart home tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go, which offers rates from 7p/kWh.

“This forthcoming electricity price rise underlines how important it is for EV drivers to charge their cars at home on a dynamic smart tariff to access the greatest savings,” said Ohme CEO David Watson. “Ohme is the only home EV charging company whose products have been compatible with every UK energy tariff since launch, giving EV drivers the maximum amount of choice available at the lowest cost.”

Ohme’s smart chargers use real-time grid connectivity to optimise charging around low-cost electricity periods. Based on the UK average annual mileage of 6,800 miles, Ohme says a driver could spend just £119 per year – under £10 a month – on electricity using a dynamic tariff. The same mileage at the new standard rate would cost £459.

The firm says a full charge of a Volkswagen ID.3 with a 77kWh battery, using an Ohme smart charger on a dynamic tariff, could cost as little as £5.39 for a range of 344 miles (WLTP).

Ohme has also launched a new MultiCar feature within its app, allowing households with more than one electric vehicle to switch between vehicles, track energy use, and differentiate charging costs – particularly useful for those claiming expenses for company car use.

Ohme is the official home charging partner for brands including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, Smart, Hyundai and the Volkswagen Group in the UK and Ireland. It is also the exclusive charger provider for customers on the Motability Scheme, the UK’s largest fleet operator. The company recently won awards for best tariff integration and for its ePod charger in the 2024 What Wallcharger? Awards.
