Kia showcases PV5 WAV electric van at Future of the Car Summit in partnership with Motability Operations
Kia has unveiled its PV5 wheelchair accessible electric van at the FT Future of the Car Summit in London, highlighting its commitment to inclusive mobility through a collaboration with Motability Operations.
Kia Corporation has presented its new PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit in London, developed in partnership with Motability Operations.
The electric vehicle has been designed to improve mobility for wheelchair users, their families, and carers, while aligning with Kia’s broader vision of becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider.
Sangdae Kim, executive vice president and head of Kia’s PBV division, said: “The PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges. By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology with thoughtful design, we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility, and our partnership with Motability Operations is a testament to our commitment to making this vision a reality.”
The PV5 WAV features side-entry curb-side access, a third-row tip-up seat to enable caregiver assistance, and a 300kg-rated wheelchair entry ramp. It also includes a bespoke wheelchair belt fastening system and is based on Kia’s open AAOS software platform to integrate necessary accessibility features.
Manufactured at Kia’s Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea, the side-entry variant of the PV5 WAV will be built using a dedicated and sustainable manufacturing process. The model is part of Kia’s response to growing demand for WAVs as life expectancy increases and ICE vehicle conversions become less viable under tightening emissions rules.
This initiative follows earlier accessible mobility projects by Kia, including the “Green Trip” programme in South Korea and a universal mobility pilot in Los Angeles. The partnership with Motability Operations supports the UK’s largest vehicle leasing scheme for people with disabilities and will help expand access to electric WAVs as demand rises.
Kia confirmed plans to extend availability of the PV5 WAV to other global regions in line with its aim to serve a wider community of drivers through inclusive electric vehicle solutions.
