Global Volvo sales down in May, EVs falling further

The company sold 27% fewer electric vehicles (EVs) this May, with EVs now making up 21% of total sales.

Volvo Cars sold 59,822 cars in May, 12% less than in May 2024, with EV sales now losing ground to combustion-powered cars.

The company sold 27% fewer electric vehicles (EVs) this May, with EVs now making up 21% of total sales.

EVs made up 25% of total Volvo sales last May.

Plug-in-hybrid sales fared better, with an 11% sales dip year-on-year, making up the same 23% of total sales as last year.

Combustion-powered and mild hybrid vehicles made up the shortfall of EV sales, seeing only a 5% dip in sales, with combustion-powered cars now accounting for 56% of total sales.

The top selling model in May 2025 was the XC60, likely boosted by the update it received earlier this year, however Volvo still sold 1,099 fewer of the model when compared with last May, for a new total of 19,408 cars.

The XC40 and its EV variant, the EX40 followed behind, with the pair actually seeing a sales increase in May 2025, now reaching 14,892 deliveries, up from 13,640.
