Richard Roberts, managing director of Trident Garages, welcomed Dr Ben Spencer MP to his dealership on 9th May as part of the National Franchised Dealers Association’s (NFDA) ongoing parliamentary engagement programme. The meeting was also attended by Sue Robinson, chief executive of the NFDA.

The discussion focused on the Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, with the NFDA calling for new fiscal incentives to counteract recent tax measures such as the Expensive Car Supplement.

Robinson urged the Government to consider reintroducing the Plug-In Car Grant, warning that the lack of upfront incentives risks deterring consumers from switching to electric vehicles.

“The UK currently has stricter deadlines than the EU, yet offers no fiscal support,” she said, highlighting the 2030 ban compared to Europe’s 2035. Charging infrastructure improvements were also raised as essential to meet ZEV targets.

Roberts and Robinson also warned of growing cost pressures on employers. Under the latest National Insurance changes announced in the Autumn Budget, a franchised dealer employing a technician on a £40,000 salary would pay £985.80 more annually – rising even higher for EV specialists.

Business rates were another key concern. Attendees discussed the disparity between online and high street retailers and the risk of destabilising the sector.

The NFDA noted that from 2026-27, commercial properties with a rateable value above £500,000 will receive 0% relief while effectively subsidising lower-rated properties – a policy expected to raise £1.3bn.

Sue Robinson, chief executive of the NFDA, said: “NFDA plans to meet with Dr Ben Spencer MP later in the year at the Conservative Party Conference. NFDA remains committed to engaging with MPs to ensure the concerns of dealers and consumers are heard and addressed.”
