Marshall Motor Holdings plc has announced plans to close five franchised dealerships and one used car centre. The effected businesses are Citroen Cambridge, Honda Mountsorrel, Nissan Boston and Vauxhall Welwyn Garden City, the group’s Oxford Maserati franchise, and the used car centre that shares the same Oxford site.

In its statement the group characterized Honda Mountsorrel, Nissan Boston and Vauxhall Welwyn Garden City as trading in relatively small markets and within close proximity of other Marshall dealerships of the same franchise. Marshall’s Oxford Maserati franchise, and the used car centre that shares the same site are closing due to the firm’s belief that the site is “subscale” with a high fixed cost base. Marshall’s Citroen Cambridge new car sales franchise will also close. This will marks the end of Marshall’s retail representation of the Citroen brand. The Group will be retaining Citroen authorised repairer status in Cambridge.

The firm estimates closure costs at approximately £6m. Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive Officer commented,  “These proposed closures are in line with the Group’s stated strategy of driving class leading returns and will support our 2018 financial aspirations. This decisive action reflects the Board’s focus on tight financial discipline whilst investing in and supporting our businesses. Over coming weeks we will be engaging with colleagues in these businesses and will be seeking to mitigate the impact where possible.”
