The Automobile Association (AA), has celebrated its 120th anniversary, founded in 1905 to help drivers avoid police speed traps.

Since launching its yellow patrol vans in 1961, which took over from a fleet of motorcycles, the AA has become the UK’s most popular breakdown service provider.

Jakob Pfaudler, CEO at the AA, said: “It is an honour to lead The AA as it celebrates its 120th anniversary. The world class customer care our Patrols and employees give our members everyday fills me with pride.

“We are immensely proud of our past but are always looking ahead to propel ourselves forward.

“It is our deep heritage, and the ambition to remain always ahead, which helps us to give confidence to drivers both now and in the future.

“As the UK automotive sector evolves with electric vehicles, connected cars and autonomous technology, The AA and our Patrols will always be needed to keep people on the road.”

The company has a history of embracing modern technology: pioneering roadside petrol pumps in 1920, transitioning to paperless digital systems at its command centre in 1986, launching an online route planner in 1999, and beginning to add electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in 2024.

The AA has also been constructing signs since 1906, initially due to local authorities refusing to do so, but later for the London 2012 Olympics, Royal funerals, and the Glastonbury Festival.
