A new nationwide survey commissioned by Castrol has found that nearly one in three UK car owners are unsure which engine oil is suitable for their vehicle, highlighting a key opportunity for workshops to offer clearer guidance.

The survey revealed that 29% of respondents lacked confidence in identifying the correct engine oil for their car, with women (42%) more likely than men (14%) to report this uncertainty. Only 19% said the dealer that sold them the vehicle had informed them of the correct oil type during handover.

This gap in knowledge presents a clear opportunity for workshops. A majority of car owners (58%) said they would like their workshop to explain which engine oil they recommend during a scheduled service. However, just 41% of respondents said their current workshop typically provides this information.

When selecting engine oil, 24% of drivers rely on recommendations from the workshop they use, while 28% prefer guidance from the vehicle manufacturer. Only 16% said they would search online for suitable products.

Henning von Rheden, brand and comms director, Europe at Castrol, said: “Workshops have a crucial role to play in helping motorists choose the correct oil for their car’s engine, so that it operates safely and efficiently.

“It’s clear that many drivers are unsure of how to find out what type of engine oil is most suitable for their car, and they actively want workshops to provide more guidance. Consumers are evidently very receptive, and this can create great opportunities for cross-selling and up-selling premium products, as well as fostering greater loyalty.”
